The QMSU Buddy Scheme was created to help ease the transition into university for first year students. The system matches freshers with current students depending on their courses. Each student along with a group of 4-8 will be assigned a pair of buddies. These current students are your mentors and may or may not be doing the same course as you are but will most likely be within the same department. You can sign up here and you’ll be able to meet your mentors during induction week!
This scheme is a great way to not just make more friends but also stay in contact with seniors who could help you out when it comes to choosing modules or field trips. As part of the scheme, mentors are required to plan events for their buddies. This could be something simple like a movie night or even going out for laser tag.
“…it is a voluntary scheme that will help you to settle into university life, socialise, meet new people and have some fun!” – The Buddy Scheme
As a buddy mentor last year, my buddies and I kept in touch through a Whatsapp group where they asked questions regarding coursework and modules. You might be a little hesitant to ask things to your mentor but honestly don’t be shy! They’re also students and they would’ve definitely had the same doubts as you.
If you’ve enjoyed being in the buddy scheme, you’ll definitely enjoy being a mentor next year! Not only do you make great friends but you can help improve someone’s experience at university just by talking to them. So don’t forget to sign up to be a mentor next year! Plus it’s an added bonus to mention on your CV! 🙂
