Firstly, welcome to the world of university! Get ready to see and experience things you’ve never imagined before!
I’m Rafi. A brown, Bengali, Muslim who supports Liverpool FC and lives in Tower Hamlets. I’m currently going in third year of BSc Geography with Business Management. I’ve always loved human geography and have been interested in various aspects of business. Queen Mary is unique in providing such a great combination of subjects. As a result of my degree I have studied areas ranging from Anthropocene to Accountancy, ethics of biomedicine to Google’s advertisement model and Islamic finance to effects of neoliberalism. I’ve always wanted to do human modules but also wanted a BSc – this was the perfect solution. The inter-disciplinary nature of every module has helped me gain a new perspective of life. I have come to finally understand what it means to think like a geographer! (If you’ve done AQA Geography – I offer my condolencesJ)
I am looking into various careers for the future. The QM career services has been great help. They provide tailored support in creating CVs to preparing for interviews – as well providing work experience opportunity. I would definitely recommend you get involved with them to see what opportunities you can get involved with.
First year goes quickly. There is no doubt about it. The way to make a success out of your first year is early engagement. Whether it is joining a society or speaking to your tutor about various issues – do it from the start. Join in organising events by various societies, get involved with QM elections, take up roles within the School of Geography and attend various social events to make friends. Don’t worry if not everything works out but it is important that you get involved with the university life as much as you can. These three years will be over before you know it. Trust me… I’m still confused as to how the last two years went so fast. You need to make the best out of it!
University is a strange place. It’s so big and there are so many people – but it is still possible to live in your own bubble if you want to. We, as Springboards coordinators, are here to help you get the best experience you want from this pivotal first year. So get in touch with us any time! We are here to help. Whether you are struggling with something or you want to seek out new opportunity – our team will provide you the right advice and support. We’ve been in your shoes so we understand the various challenges university students face.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions! This is a new environment for you. It’ll take time to adjust. So be easy on yourself. University is filled with helpful people (*cough* Springboards), so ask for help, advice or guidance whenever you need something. I hope you have a great year and make some amazing memories!
